Spinal Cord Injury treatment with Sydney Rehab

What to expect?? On your first consultation we will go through a full medical history to ensure we know you back to front. We listen carefully to your goals and then set some goals with you. In order to deliver, your therapist will set time orientated goals and also discuss the best way to achieve them. Like with all our patients we completely tailor the program to suit you and the potential side effects/symptoms you may be experiencing. Our team of Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists and Occupational Therapists are trained to be able to prescribe the correct style, dosage and intensity of exercise to complement your medical treatment plan and to assist you through it from start to finish. You can expect to feel nurtured throughout the process.

Injury Prevention:

Spinal Cord Injury patients can be prone to secondary conditions and injury to other parts of the body. The last thing you need is an extra issue on top of what you are going through. We do this through a physiotherapy evidence based approach for injury prevention. Our therapists have the highest qualifications in the industry. We have an extensive background in musculoskeletal physiotherapy with our director having over 16 years of experience with musculoskeletal therapy.

Experience an EFFECTIVE treatment, the only difference is that it is safer because of our professional understanding of injury and the mechanisms that cause injury.

The latest equipment and technology:

We have state of the art equipment that will help you get on track. For mobile services we are able to use equipment you may have and we also bring our own. Our equipment allows us to carefully measure your body’s strength and endurance and then re-assess to see the progress you have made. Our aim is to teach you how to eventually take care of yourself and grow your knowledge and our equipment allows us to do this with feedback for you and your therapist.

What is Spinal Cord Injury?

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is the damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling.  Spinal cord injury is very different from back injuries such as ruptured disks, spinal stenosis or pinched nerves. There are currently nearly 20,000 people in Australia living with spinal cord injury.Spinal cord injuries are commonly caused by trauma – e.g. motor vehicle accidents, falls and diving. Sports-related spinal cord injuries seem to occur more frequently in children and work-related injuries are mainly found in adults. Signs and symptoms of a spinal cord injury may present immediately or some symptoms may be delayed as the swelling and bleeding occur in or around the spinal cord.  There are 3 main areas in which a person may suffer spinal cord injury – cervical, thoracic, and lumbar. The fourth section of the spine – (sacral)  does not contain spinal cord tissue.Finding a course of action and rehab to treat the symptoms will provide a better chance for easing the recovery process. Working with a team of health care professionals including physiotherapists and exercise physiologists can assist in the improvement of independent functional abilities. Exercise programs can help improve sensation, muscle activity, increase daily living independence and decrease bone mineral density.Spinal cord injuries are divided into two broad categories. Incomplete and complete. With incomplete injuries, the cord is only partially severed. The injured person retains some function. In these cases, the degree of function depends on the extent of the injuries.  By contrast, complete injuries occur when the spinal cord is fully severed, eliminating function. With physiotherapy and treatment, it is possible to regain some functions. At this stage in Australia there are no cures for spinal cord injury, however there is extensive study and work towards finding the best treatments. Sydney Rehab has the means to treat spinal cord injury sufferers in their own home.
