What is Cerebral Palsy?:

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a physical disability that affects movement and posture.  There is around 34,000 people in Australia living with CP – that is 1 in 500 babies diagnosed with CP.  Cerebral means ‘of the brain’ and palsy refers to ‘a lack of muscle control’. It occurs to the developing brain either during pregnancy or shortly after birth.   People may experience difficulty walking, stiff muscles, involuntary movements, a speech delay in a child and stuttering to name only a few.

The Australian Cerebral Palsy Register has identified four groups that, statistically, have a greater risk of CP – Males, Small Babies, Multiple Birth Babies and Premature Babies. Spastic hemiplegia, where one half of the body has difficulty with voluntary movement is the most common presentation of CP. Approximately 40% of people with cerebral palsy have hemiplegia.  At this stage, there is no known cure.

Without rehabilitation and orthopaedic management, a person with CP can deteriorate physically. Children with CP may be supported by a full team of health care professionals and community based support services who will work together to help reach their goals. Most children with CP will walk – 60% are independent walkers, 10% will walk with an aid and 30% will use a wheelchair.

Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists can focus on encouraging a person’s day to day movement skills such as sitting, walking, dressing and toileting along with muscle strengthening exercises. Your therapist can offer a range of specialist interventions such as walking frames, supportive seating and wheelchairs. Physical therapy implements strength and flexibility exercises, heat treatment, massages and special equipment to give children with cerebral palsy more independence.

Flexibility exercises and massages are often used for children with spastic cerebral palsy; these exercises not only help improve mobility, but also can prevent painful muscle tightening that could require surgical correction. Strength training exercises from a qualified Exercise Physiologist or Physiotherapist are used to increase muscle tone in children with Athetoid cerebral palsy.

Parents looking for a therapist need to find someone who has experience treating children with cerebral palsy. Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists with experience treating CP understand the unique needs of these children and can tailor an individualized treatment regimen.

These therapists observation and a series of standardized tests to measure motor function. They look for specific postures and movements that could be corrected, and develop a physical therapy plan specifically for your child.
