Our aim is to teach you how to eventually take care of yourself and grow your knowledge and our equipment allows us to do this with feedback for you and your therapist.

What is Motor Neurone Disease?:

Nerve cells (neurones) control the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow. Motor neurone disease (MND) is the name given to a group of diseases in which these neurones fail to work normally. Muscles then gradually weaken and waste, as neurones degenerate and die.  One in 11,434 Australians have MND. 58% of people in Australian with MND are under the age of 65.MND early symptoms could be considered mild such as stumbling due to weakness of the leg muscles, slurring in speech, cramps and muscle twitches.  Symptoms can progress and then may include breathing difficulties, muscle fatigue, stiff joints, weight loss and pain. Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch are usually not affected by MND.Although there is no cure for MND yet, research has shown some interventions can help people living with MND to live better for longer. People with MND are encouraged to discuss any therapies they hear about with their neurologist or health care practitioners.A multidisciplinary care team for a person with MND usually includes a doctor, allied health professionals (such as a dietitian, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, social worker and speech pathologist), nurses and local palliative and community care workers. Other team members who have particular expertise are involved as needed, such as a respiratory specialist. The degeneration of upper motor (UMN) and lower motor (LMN) neurons, leads to progressive weakness of bulbar, limb, thoracic and abdominal muscles causing muscle weakness, stiffness and immobility. It is recommended that an assessment and continuing reviews are carried out by a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist for the management of exercise, positioning and pain management and for the prescription of appropriate assistive technology to assist independence, mobility and comfort. An exercise programme for people with MND can assist in maintaining joint range of movement, prevent contractures, to reduce stiffness and discomfort, to optimise function and quality of life. An exercise physiologist can create a programme to the person’s level of function and tailor it to their specific needs, abilities and preferences. They will be able to take into account factors such as postural needs and fatigue. The exercise programme might be a resistance programme, an active assisted programme or a passive programme.

Consult closely with your Sydney exercise physiologist, physiotherapist or healthcare professional when devising an individualised exercise program. Call Sydney Rehab today to discuss this condition and how rehab can help you with your particular situation.
