What is Multiple Sclerosis?:

MS is a chronic progressive disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).

MS affects over 25,000 people in Australia and more than two million diagnosed worldwide. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40. Evidence shows that approximately three times as many women have MS as men. MS can progress in many different ways. Some people with MS may become seriously disabled whilst others may have one or two attacks and then remain symptom-free for the rest of their lives. The frequency and severity of attacks cannot be predicted. Rehab is an important part of the journey and can help to slow the progression of symptoms.

The immune system defends the body from attack by micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses. In the case of MS, the immune system attacks its own myelin, causing disruptions to the nerve transmissions. At this stage, there is no known cure for MS however there are a number of supportive treatment options available to help manage symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. As yet, there is not one single test to diagnose MS instead a number of specialised tests may be necessary, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

MS symptoms are unpredictable and depending on which part of the central nervous system is affected and to what degree can vary greatly. Symptoms can be any combination of problems, including muscular spasms and problems with weakness, coordination, balance and functioning of the arms and legs, fatigue,  vertigo, pins and needles, continence problems, memory loss, depression and cognitive difficulties.

With the support of a physiotherapist you can improve strength, mobility and bowel and bladder function for people with mild to moderate MS through moderate exercise. A healthy weight, will also be maintained through exercise which reduces the impact of some MS symptoms, such as pain and fatigue.

Before you start, it is always advisable for people with MS to consult their local health professionals such as doctors, physiotherapists or exercise physiologists to learn more about what lifestyle amendments they can try in order to get the most out of their daily life and mitigate their MS.

Australian MS specific guidelines advise aerobic exercise 30 minutes 2-3 days per week with strength training exercise of major muscle groups for 2-3 days per week. Finding an experienced exercise physiologist who can tailor an individualised program can be beneficial. A tailored exercise program can help to develop the maximum potential of bone, muscle and respiration, avoid secondary complications and benefit overall good health and well-being.

Why train with someone who lacks the qualifications to deal with your condition?
